20 Million Historical Artefacts, Including A Meteoroid & Oldest Fossil, Gutted In Massive Brazil National Museum Fire

The Museu Nacional in Rio was engulfed in flames on Sunday evening destroying millions of years old artefacts. The museum was among of the largest museums in the Americas.

The fire broke out after the museum was closed and the cause of the blaze is yet to be determined. No deaths or injuries have been reported as yet.

More than 20 million items are stored within the museum’s collection, including the 12,000-year-old fossilised remains of “Luzia”, the oldest human fossil found in Brazil. Another priceless artefact, a 5.5-ton meteorite discovered in Brazil in 1784, was also housed within the museum.
