A group of nine ministers for EU affairs today said that the European Commission’s proposal for the 2014-20 budget is too high.

Ministers for EU affairs from Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK met in Brussels this morning ahead of a meeting of EU affairs ministers from all 27 member states.

Following the meeting, which was organised by Birgitta Ohlsson, Sweden’s EU affairs minister, the group issued a statement saying: “The level of the Commission’s proposal is too high and must be reduced.” It added that the budget should not increase member states’ contribution to EU funding.

Ohlsson said in a statement: “In the middle of the European debt crisis, it is important the Union embraces real reforms, not re-labelling of expenditure areas. We need to spend better, not spend more.”

In July, the Commission proposed €1,053 billion for the multiannual financial framework (MFF) for 2014-20.
