PROVIDENCE, RI — An unexpected, heartfelt moment during the final round of Monday’s Jeopardy! episode choked up fans of the show and the venerated host, Alex Trebek, himself.
“We love you, Alex!” wrote Brown University student Dhruv Gaur.
The sweet message caught Trebek by surprise.
“That’s very kind, thank you,” he said, clearly choked up as he deducted Gaur’s score. Having bet $1,995, he was left with just $5 and finished the game in third place.
That night, Gaur tweeted that he was grateful to have had the chance to “say what I know everyone was thinking.”
“Alex had just shared with us that he was reentering treatment for pancreatic cancer. We were all hurting for him so badly,” Gaur said. “When Final Jeopardy came up, I could’ve tried to puzzle it together, but really, just kept thinking about Alex, and thought he should know.”
Gaur is a student at Brown University from Gainesville, Georgia. He competed as a semifinalist in the show’s Tournament of Champions.
