Cobbers Go 1-2 At NWCA Dual Meet

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Concordia lost two of its three matches at the prestigious NWCA National Duals and was eliminated from the dual-meet tournament which features the top teams in Division III.

The Cobbers dropped a 31-10 decision to No.22-ranked Ferrum (Va.) to start the day but then rebounded to beat Wis.-Oshkosh 30-9 before falling to The College of New Jersey 23-18 in the third round of the consolation bracket.

The Cobbers are now 7-6 in dual meets this season.

Junior Dan Marquette led Concordia as he won all three of his matches with two coming as bonus point wins. Marquette was one of only two CC wrestlers to claim a victory against Ferrum in the opener. He posted a 17-5 major decision at 184. He then followed that up with a pin fall against Oshkosh at the 3:38 mark. Marquette finished off the day by winning 8-1 against his opponent from New Jersey.

Justice Davis, Hunter SantAmour and Blane Tschida were also unbeaten in the tournament but only wrestled in two matches. Davis was held out of the match against Ferrum after the team decision was cemented. He then beat Elijah Burdick of Oshkosh for the second time this year before recording an impressive 48-second pin fall against Sigala Fosam of TCNJ.

Davis is now 15-4 on the year and has won nine of his past 10 bouts.

SantAmour snapped a two-match losing streak in the second match against Oshkosh. He fought through three periods and claimed a 5-2 decision. SantAmour then record his first pin fall of the year as he put his TCNJ opponent’s shoulders on the mat at 2:42.

The two wins bring SantAmour’s season record to 9-6.

Like SantAmour, Tschida was held out of the first match against Ferrum and then won against Oshkosh and TCNJ. He recorded a pin fall at 149 against Oshkosk and claimed a 10-4 decision in the final match against the College of New Jersey.

Tschida is now 12-6 for the year and has recorded pins in three of his last five bouts.

Jake Johnson won two matches but lost his bout against TCNJ and was 2-1 on the day. He won by pin fall in the third period of the first match against Ferrum and then won 6-2 against Oshkosh.

WHAT’S NEXT: Concordia will continue with its national-caliber competition next weekend when they participate in the Matman Invite in Mount Vernon, Iowa on Saturday, Jan. 14.
