Prime Minister Narendra Modi was expected to outlaw the use of single-use plastic on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi today as part of a broader campaign to rid India of single-use plastics by 2022, but this imposition of a blanket ban on single-use plastics has been held off.

The measure was seen as too disruptive for industry at a time when it is coping with an economic slowdown and job losses, news agency Reuters reported.
