Speaking in an interview with L’Équipe, AS Monaco forward Valère Germain revealed that when he was not picked to be in the squad for the Champions League knock-out contest with Arsenal in 2015, he cried.
“I did not understand. I thought that I deserved to be on the bench more than others. The coach thought that they could bring more than I could. I had my entire family in London, it was difficult, I cried at the end of the match. It was a painful episode and it was also why I wanted to leave. But without that episode, I would not be here today. I had to find enjoyment elsewhere. Everything happens for a reason, even the bad things. Maybe I am better today. Maybe I could have performed in that season two years ago, if I had played more. Aside from that, my fifteen goals with Nice made people turn their heads. I had done enough to change the coach’s mind.”
