WWE Superstar David Otunga recently sat down with Chris Van Vilet and discussed a wide variety of topics. One of those topics was Otunga’s transition from the pro wrestling ring to the commentator’s table. Many WWE fans have likely always wondered why Otunga chose this new direction in Vince McMahon’s company. So whose idea was it?
“It was mine and Michael Cole’s. I transitioned from in-ring and then started picking up more films and what-not and you know, also raising my son. I started doing stuff at the studio, the network and one day Michael Cole called me and asked me if I wanted to become a commentator. I was like wow, I never thought about that. Alright, give it a shot. And it’s awesome.”
Otunga gave Cole a lot of respect for the work he’s done as the voice of WWE, pointing out there’s indeed a lot of different things to juggle when it comes to delivering a successful program. But was Otunga ready to leave his ring career behind?
:”Not necessarily. I had some things going on in life that I was kind of forced into making that decision. That was my love, was in-ring. But I have other things that I’m interested in as well and so there was positives, it did allow me to focus on films.
Being able to become a commentator, that is a lot easier on my body and fun and has a lot more longevity.”
Otunga also spoke about his most recent role in director Tyler Perry’s upcoming film, A Madea Family Funeral. How did he get involved in the project?
“I got a call and he offered me the role, which is pretty crazy. You get a call out of the blue and it was one of his producers and I’m like wait, are you serious? ‘Yes, Tyler has a new Madea movie and he would like you to be the lead role in it.’ I was like what, wow. ‘And yeah, we need you to get on a plane tomorrow.’”
Otunga rose to fame in WWE as a member of the Nexus faction in 2010. Though he never really achieved greatness between the ropes, he did show great potential and has always kept himself in peak physical condition. A Madea Family Funeral opens on Friday, March 1.
